Professor Ebenezer Kofi Howard
Head of Department

It is gratifying and honour, on behalf of the staff and students of this noble institution, to welcome you to the Department of Industrial Art in the Faculty of Art, College of Art and Built Environment of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. We offer you a great academic environment and an unforgettable experience comparable to any best academic department in the world.

Established in 1968, the Department of Industrial Art is mandated to train high-level manpower to manage the country’s industries and institutions in the areas of Ceramics, Metal Product Design, Textiles and Fashion Design. A unique addition is the Integrated Indigenous Art which focuses on integration of indigenous concepts, materials and techniques aimed at expanding and developing the frontiers of indigenous technology for sustainable development of the Art and Craft industry.

As a multidisciplinary department, we are poised to promote and develop academic excellence in teaching and research with a focus on industrial practices. The Department can boast of its unique programmes of study which are all oriented toward Competency-Based Training (CBT) and Problem-Based Learning (PBL). Our programmes span Textile Art, Design and Technology, Fashion Design, Metal Product Design Technology, Ceramic Art, Design and Technology and Integrated Rural Art and Industry. Currently, the department runs 6 undergraduate programmes and 10 postgraduate programmes.

I must emphasize that the department deems it a great pleasure and honour of having you as a student, a staff, a partner or a collaborator to share with you our repertoire of knowledge and skills pertaining to our unique specializations.  With our well experienced, hospitable and competent senior academic faculty made up of lecturers, senior lecturers and professors with PhD degrees in relevant fields of speciality in industrial art, science and technology, we are passionate about providing the best knowledge and skills to our clientele and partners aimed at sustainable development of quality teaching and research towards the realisation of our vision and the university at large.

We have collaborative linkages with a number of local and international institutions and industries where our students and staff go for industrial attachment, internships, academic exchanges, collaborative research and projects to enhance and augment theoretical and practical knowledge and skills acquired or delivered in the lecture halls. The Department has trained and continues to train competent graduates who are serving as technical staff, supervisors, managers, and instructors, among others at various levels in industry and institutions within and outside Ghana. Most of our products have established their own firms and are doing credibly well in the world of work. We have set high and enviable standards for ourselves and we do not compromise on quality. Being part of our team means you have subscribed to a winning team to develop your potential to the optimal level. The Department welcomes you to be part of its success agenda and you will not regret doing so. Once again, we welcome you to the Department of Industrial Art and wish you well in your academic expedition at KNUST.
