MFA Textile and Fashion Design

Master of Fine Art (MFA) in Textile and Fashion Design – Program Overview

MFA Textile and Fashion Design is a practice-based postgraduate program designed to nurture creative excellence and technical competence in response to the evolving needs of Ghana’s textile and garment industry. Rooted in the rich cultural traditions of textile art and fashion, the program trains designers, artists, and researchers to contribute meaningfully to education, industry, and national development.

Introduced in 2004 by the Department of Industrial Art, the program blends advanced studio practice with research, emphasizing the use of computer-aided design (CAD/CAM) and innovation in textile and garment production. It also responds to global and local industry challenges such as, competition from low-cost imports and a growing need for skilled professionals in both the apparel export market and academic institutions.

With specializations in Textile Design and Fashion Design, the MFA program equips students with the creative and managerial skills required for leadership roles in design, teaching, and enterprise. It leverages Ghana’s human and material resources to support the revitalization of the textile sector and positions graduates to compete effectively on both national and international platforms.

Aim

With a focus on studio-based research, the MFA programme with options in Textile Design and Fashion Design aims to build high-level human resource capacity in indigenous and contemporary art studio practice to fill the teaching, research and industry gap within the country and beyond.
